Massive rains disturbs normal life in Mumbai July 08, 2024 12:43
Downpours have struck Mumbai and its surrounding regions in the past day, leading to widespread waterlogging and disruption of suburban train services. Some parts of the city have experienced over 300 millimeters of rainfall in just six hours, from 1 am to 7 am on Monday. As a result, the India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and the Konkan belt. The areas of Vikhroli's Veer Savarkar Marg Municipal School and MCMCR Powai recorded the highest rainfall, exceeding 315 millimeters in the last 24 hours. The heavy rains have also led to the cancellation of over 50 flights, prompting airlines to use social media to warn passengers and advise them to check their flight status before heading to the airport. Visuals from across the city show people navigating through waist-deep waters and traffic jams on Mumbai's roads. In response, all government, private, and municipal schools and colleges in the city have been closed for the day. At Dombivli station, people were seen waiting for trains on submerged tracks, while waterlogging was reported in various areas, including Worli, Buntara Bhavan, Kurla East, King's Circle, Dadar, and Vidyavihar Railway Station. #WATCH | Severely waterlogged streets and railway track in Chunabhatti area of Mumbai, as the city is marred by heavy rains pic.twitter.com/qdxk6yi8Hb — ANI (@ANI) July 8, 2024 Heavy rainfall has disrupted train services in the Thane district, causing a suspension of operations between Kasara and Titwala stations. The tracks between Atgaon and Thansit stations were covered in soil, deemed unsafe for rail traffic on the busy Kalyan-Kasara route. Officials have stated that the waterlogging will subside if the rain stops for over two hours, but the weather forecast predicts heavy rain throughout the day. The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai. High tide is expected to bring waves up to 4.4 meters around 2 pm, leading to the diversion, rescheduling, or termination of several trains between Kalyan and Kasara stations due to waterlogging. The track embankment on the Vasind-Khardi section was damaged due to heavy rainfall and flash floods between 3 am and 6 am. In response, the National Disaster Response Force has deployed teams in various affected areas, including Thane, Vasai, Mahad, Chiplun, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Ghatkopar, Kurla, and Sindhudurg, and has already rescued 49 people from a water-logged resort in Thane and 16 villagers in Palghar. #WATCH | Commuters wade through waterlogged streets at King's Circle in rain-hit Mumbai pic.twitter.com/BKdj5BFvwJ — ANI (@ANI) July 8, 2024 Excessive rainfall can swiftly cause water levels to rise, leading to widespread inundation of homes, businesses, and infrastructure. This influx of water can pose significant risks, potentially causing severe damage and disrupting the normal functioning of a community. Residents may be forced to evacuate, while essential services and transportation routes can become inaccessible. The cleanup and recovery process can be both lengthy and expensive, as the floodwaters recede and the task of repairing or rebuilding affected structures begins. Proactive measures, such as investing in effective flood mitigation strategies and emergency preparedness, can help communities become more resilient in the face of these unpredictable and potentially devastating natural events.

The Vijayawada Eastern bypass along the Chennai-Kolkata highway has received preliminary approval following discussions between the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, and the Union Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari, in Delhi on Thursday. This bypass will allow traffic heading towards Kolkata and Chennai to bypass the city of Vijayawada, reducing congestion within the city, especially at key intersections like Ramavarapadu and Benz Circle. Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni) stated that Gadkari not only approved the Vijayawada Eastern bypass but also sanctioned the construction of an Outer Ring Road (ORR) surrounding Amaravati, the new capital city, as well as a flyover from NTR Health University to Nidamanuru. However, a senior National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) official, who wished to remain anonymous, clarified that while they are aware of the meeting and the approval of the Vijayawada Eastern bypass and Amaravati ORR projects, they have not received any official communication from the NHAI headquarters regarding the sanctioning of the flyover from NTR Health University to Nidamanuru. రాష్ట్రంలో నిర్మాణంలో ఉన్న జాతీయ రహదారుల ప్రాజెక్టులపై కేంద్ర రోడ్డు రవాణా, జాతీయ రహదారుల శాఖ మంత్రి శ్రీ నితిన్ గడ్కరీ తో నేడు ఢిల్లీలో చర్చలు జరిపిన ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్ ముఖ్యమంత్రి శ్రీ నారా చంద్రబాబునాయుడు గారు. pic.twitter.com/57mbIAhqdx — CMO Andhra Pradesh (@AndhraPradeshCM) July 4, 2024 The Krishna district region in Andhra Pradesh will see the construction of a crucial Eastern bypass and flyover, providing much-needed relief to the residents of Vijayawada. The NEET-PG exam for admission to postgraduate medical courses will be held this month, officials said this afternoon after the home ministry met officials of the state cybercrime agency. This official added: The questions are prepared two hours in advance. The NEET-PG exam scheduled for June 23 was postponed hours before it was scheduled to begin due to allegations of paper leaks and other irregularities in the UG exam. The government had said then that it would “conduct a thorough assessment of the robustness of the NEET-PG process to be conducted by the National Board of Examinations for Medical Students”. The government said the decision was taken in the best interest of students. The cancellation of the exam, which was attended by hundreds of thousands of aspiring medics, sparked an outcry, particularly among those who had traveled miles to take the exam. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan ordered a committee to examine the complaint. The cancellation came amid public backlash against the NEET-UG and UGC-NET exams, which confirm university appointments and award research fellowships. Possible malpractices in NEET-UG and UGC-NET exams - Pradhan confirmed last month that students had raised red flags and questions were being sold on the dark web - conducted both exams, the in-charge, SK Singh, who looked at the results, and The Attention the National Testing Agency was rejected. The NET re-exam (the exam was canceled two days after it was held) will be held from July 25 to 27. The NTA was criticized not only by students and parents but also by opposition parties, so much so that its office in Delhi's Okhla district was briefly occupied by a group from the National Union of Indian Students, the student wing of the Indian Parliament. He accused the BJP of “ruining” the education system. The NTA also faces a notice from the Supreme Court (which will be responded to on July 8). Meanwhile, the CBI probe into the NEET-UG case led to numerous arrests and raids at coaching centers, school campuses and other places across the country. Last week, federal authorities raided seven locations in Gujarat and arrested a school principal and a reporter from a local Hindi newspaper in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand. In total, the CBI has filed six FIRs or first information reports, including the report filed when the case was handed over to it by the government. The remaining five cases include three in Bihar, one each in Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Officials had previously told NDTV that a nationwide corruption ring may be involved. The NEET riots have turned into a major political mess between the Congress-led India bloc and non-aligned opposition parties, including Naveen Patnaik's BJD, which is targeting the ruling BJP. In Parliament, non-Congress Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun led the call for a debate while both houses debated a motion to thank President Draupadi Murmu for her speech. The controversy over the NEET exam (almost 2.4 million students took the exam on May 5) erupted last month after the results were announced. The first red flag was an unusually high score. 67 students, including six from a coaching center, achieved the highest score to date with a maximum score of 720. According to the report from the state's tax office, 1,563 students were also surveyed about awarding "credit points" instead of the examination method.

T1 only handles domestic flights through IndiGo and SpiceJet and the airport handles around 1,400 flights daily. IndiGo has announced that flight operations have been affected due to structural damage at Delhi Airport's Terminal 1. The low-cost airline said in a statement that flights to Delhi were canceled due to the incident as "passengers were unable to enter the terminal". "Passengers already at the terminal can board their scheduled flights, but those departing later will be provided with alternative routes," an IndiGo spokesperson said. “This unplanned situation led to disruptions throughout the network. Customers are advised to track and confirm their flight status before heading to the airport,” it said. SpiceJet has canceled its flights until further notice. "Please check our social media channels for further updates," the airline told passengers. It is raining heavily in Delhi today for the second day. The exam was initially scheduled to take place on March 3 but was eventually postponed to July 7. However, due to the Rath Yatra event, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has postponed the exam date to June 23 and the same has also been cancelled. . The 3 hour and 30 minute test consists of 200 multiple choice questions (MCQs) with four possible answers for each question. This exam is divided into several time-limited sections according to the structure of the updated article. NBEMS introduces a compulsory timed section on computer based platforms in all MCQ based exams like NEET-PG, NEET-MDS, NEET-SS, FMGE, DNB-PDCET, GPAT, DPEE, FDST, FET etc. A measure to strengthen security and the sanctity of the investigation in view of the threats emerging during the investigation has already been outlined. According to NBEMS, there are several timed sections in the exam question paper. If the NEET-PG 2024 question paper has five timed sections (A, B, C, D and E), there are a total of 40 questions and the time allotted for each section is 42 minutes. Candidates will not be able to proceed to the next section until they have completed the allotted time for the previous section. After the end of the section and the prescribed deadline, applicants will no longer be able to review or edit their questions. After the time allotted for the previous section has expired, the next section of questions begins automatically. NBEMS states that applicants have the opportunity to mark a question for review whether they attempt it or not. Before the time allotted for a section has expired, applicants may review the questions listed in that section. The marking scheme is used to grade questions marked for review. Students should note that the actual number of timed sections in the exam may vary depending on the total number of questions on the questionnaire. NBEMS also mentioned that this method will also be used in GPAT 2024, NEET PG 2024 and future computer based exams under NBEMS.

Arvind Kejriwal's request for an extension of his interim bail on medical grounds has been denied by the Supreme Court, which refused to hold an urgent hearing on the matter. The Delhi Chief Minister was granted interim bail earlier in May to campaign for his party, the AAP, leading up to elections for Delhi's seven Lok Sabha seats. He was released until June 1 and instructed to return to Tihar Jail by June 2. Mr Kejriwal had hoped for an immediate hearing, but a vacation bench stated that his plea would only be forwarded to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who would decide when it would be heard. The bench of Justice JK Maheshwari and KV Vishwanathan noted that the verdict in the original case - Mr Kejriwal challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate - had been reserved after the last hearing on May 17, and that the CJI would make an appropriate decision on when to schedule a hearing. Mr Kejriwal had requested an urgent hearing for Wednesday. The court asked why Mr Kejriwal did not mention that he was hearing cases during his plea for interim bail. He must return to jail by June 2 or face the consequences. Earlier, his lawyer argued for an immediate hearing, citing the need for medical tests. Mr Kejriwal plans to surrender on June 9, following the election results. His lawyer stressed the importance of a medical examination to protect him during his prison term. Mr Kejriwal will remain visible and available in public while out on bail, and there is no risk of him fleeing the legal process. The doctor from a private hospital in the national capital ordered several medical tests, including a PET-CT scan of his whole body, which will require five to seven days to complete. The AAP raised concerns that Mr Kejriwal, who suffers from diabetes, was being denied insulin while in jail. This sparked controversy over the availability of the "life-saving" medication. The controversy surrounding Arvind Kejriwal's well-being has made its way to the courts once again. Kejriwal had previously criticized Tihar jail and ED officials for "petty" and "politicising" his health. In response, the probe agency claimed that Kejriwal had intentionally consumed sugary foods, such as mangoes and toffees, in violation of his diet chart, putting his health at risk to justify medical bail. During today's hearing, Kejriwal cited the prison authorities' "insensitive behaviour" and his "unexplained weight loss" as symptoms of a life-threatening disease. He argued that an additional week of bail would allow him to assess any potential health complications. Kejriwal also shared that he had lost seven kilograms in a month without any reason, which the doctors found alarming and prescribed several tests. The probe agency has accused the Delhi Chief Minister of involvement in drafting a now-defunct policy and seeking kickbacks for liquor licenses. The AAP and its leader, Mr. Kejriwal, have been accused of using illegal funds to finance their election campaigns in Goa and Punjab. However, both have denied any wrongdoing and claim that the arrest and case are politically motivated, particularly as they occurred just weeks before the election. This incident has sparked a political conflict between the ruling BJP and the INDIA opposition bloc, which includes the Congress and the AAP.

Mumbai-based businessman Bhavesh Bhinde has received more than 100 notices and penalties for his company's illegal installation of a 14,400 sq ft hoarding in Ghatkopar. The hoarding collapsed last week during heavy winds and rain, killing 16 people and injuring 75 others. Officials claim that Bhinde and his company violated regulations for erecting billboards, making them the primary suspects in this preventable disaster. Fortunately, the incident has prompted authorities in Maharashtra and Chennai to take action against illegal hoardings. Bhinde fled after the collapse, but was eventually caught in Rajasthan's Udaipur after evading authorities for three days by changing locations and his name. He now faces multiple charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, in addition to 23 prior charges, including rape, cheque fraud, and illegal tree cutting to improve visibility of his illegal billboards. Concerns have been raised regarding previous contracts granted by the Indian Railways and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to build billboards and hoardings. Furthermore, the investigation into Ego Media Ltd, owned by Bhinde, has revealed questionable business practices. It has been reported that Bhinde took measures to avoid responsibility, such as appointing an associate as the company's director. However, he remained in charge of negotiating contracts, many of which are now being scrutinized for potential violations. In December of last year, Bhinde assumed the position of director after a dispute with the previous director. The collapsed hoarding was a record-breaking 120 x 120 feet, but the civic body only permits billboards up to 40 x 40 feet. The approval process for constructing the billboard is under question, as the civic body has denied granting permission. Bhushan Gagrani, the civic body chief, has ordered the removal of all "illegal" structures. While the blame game continues over the recent collapse of a billboard in Mumbai, there are still questions surrounding the legality of the structure. Ego Media, the company responsible for building the hoarding, claims they had permission from the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Railways) despite the land being leased to the Government Railway Police. The GRP has denied responsibility, stating that they lack the equipment to remove such structures and have called on the city officials to act. The BMC has yet to provide a timeline for the removal of the hoardings. Meanwhile, there are concerns over the petrol station on which the billboard fell, as it reportedly did not have an occupancy certificate. The collapse occurred during a period of heavy rain and strong winds, with several other structures being impacted. In response, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced an ex-gratia of ₹ 5 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in the Ghatkopar collapse.

Due to security reasons, Royal Challengers Bengaluru cancelled their home session some time recently, the IPL 2024 Eliminator against the Rajasthan Royals. RCB were slated to home at the Gujarat College ground in Ahmedabad on Tuesday to get ready for the knockout match, but the group chose to cancel it without any official reason. The Rajasthan Royals, on the other hand, went ahead with their standard nets session at the same scene. In any case, there was no press conference, which is bizarre on the eve of a basic IPL knockout coordinate. The Narendra Modi Stadium, the Gujarat Cricket Association's essential advertising, was inaccessible on Tuesday for RR and RCB due to the IPL Qualifier 1 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Gujarat College ground was given as an elective to RCB and RR. Bengali daily Anandabazar Patrika quoted Gujarat Police authorities to imply that the essential reason behind RCB cancelling their home session and both sides not holding a press conference was the security danger to Virat Kohli. The Gujarat Police captured four men from the Ahmedabad air terminal on Monday night on suspicion of fear exercises. The police allegedly recouped arms, suspicious recordings and content messages after looking at the safehouse of the four denounced. The data was shared with RR and RCB. RR did not act, but RCB educated the security staff that there would be no home session. The report claimed that RCB did not provide any official reason for their sudden choice to cancel the home session. Both RCB and RR landed in Ahmedabad on Monday. They had sufficient time to rest on Sunday and on Monday. There's no reason why at the slightest a home session would not be held on the eve of an imperative coordinate like an IPL Eliminator. "Virat Kohli learned most of the captures after arriving in Ahmedabad. He could be a national treasure, and his security is our most extreme need," said Vijay Singha Jwala, a police officer. "RCB did not need to require a chance. They educated us that there would be no home session. Rajasthan Royals were moreover educated around the improvement, but they had no issues going ahead with their home." Security was fixed outside RCB's group inn. There was a partitioned entry for all RCB group individuals, which was not open to any other visitors within the lodging. Indeed IPL-accredited media staff were not permitted to enter the lodging premises. The report included that the RR group arrived at the ground utilizing the "green passage." Three police escorts escorted their group transport. Captain Sanju Samson arrived late. Ravichandran Ashwin, Riyan Parag, and Yuzvendra Chahal chose to skip the home session and remain at the lodging. The RR players within the preparing were protected by heavy security. Policemen watched the whole ground. The security concerns constrained the RR and RCB group administration to cancel the pre-match press conference. RR missed a top-two wrap up after losing four matches on the run. Their final association coordinate against KKR was a washout, permitting SRH to pip them for the spot. RCB, in the interim, scripted a comeback for the ages. They won six matches on the bounce, that as well by great edges, to sneak into the playoffs. They beat Chennai Super Lords in their final match to thump the five-time champions out of the competition.
