India has more than 41 lakh confirmed COVID-19 cases of which more than 8.62 lakh cases were active as on today.

India has now emerged as the country with the second largest number of people being infected with the novel coronavirus in a country in the world. India has overtaken Brazil on Saturday when it added more than 90,000 positive cases recorded on a single day.

As on Saturday, India had more than 41.13 lakh coronavirus cases and 8.62 lakh of them were active cases. According to the latest data from the World Health Organization (WHO), Brazil had 40.41 lakh confirmed cases.

The United States with more than 61 lakh positive COVID-19 cases is the only country that is ahead of India.

While India has been contributing the largest number of new infections every day for over three weeks now, there has also been a big jump in daily numbers in the last 11 days.

During this time, India has been reporting more than 75,000 new cases every day. This number has been far less in both Brazil and the United States in the last few weeks.

Brazil has reported 51,000 new cases on Saturday, however, on some days it reported even less than 20,000 cases per day, unlike India.

The United States has also seen a drop in the number of cases and is reporting between 40,000 to 50,000 cases per day. This also means that India is now nearing to surpass the daily cases of the US to become the number one infected country with COVID-19 in the world.

A rise in Cases Expected in India

Here are the reasons why:

  • India’s emergence as the world’s second country in coronavirus cases is no surprise. India has four times the population of the US and five times that of Brazil and is also much more densely populated than both the countries.
  • With the restrictions being relaxed by implementing Unlocks, the numbers are expected to rise further that too in the short term.
  • India’s testing capacity has been increased steadily which led to the sharp rise in the cases in August which also happen in the future.
  • Around 4 to 5 lakh samples have been tested every day at the start of August and the number rose to 1 million tests every day by the end of August.
  • No country has carried more tests on a day except the United States.
  • There has been an increase in the number of deaths since the last few days and the count is expected to rise in the coming weeks.
  • The total number of people who succumbed to the virus in the virus is 70,000 which is the third-largest in the world.
