Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish and got emotional at the dalit scholar, Rohith Vemula’s suicide at the University of Hyderabad.

In Lucknow, PM addressed the convocation of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, during which he said, "A young son of my country, Rohith, was compelled to commit suicide, what his family must have gone through, I can feel the pain."

"A mother has lost his son, there cannot be a bigger grief," Modi said.

"Reasons (behind the suicide) and politics (on the issue) may have their own place but the fact remains that a mother has lost her son," he added.

Rohith Vemula, who was protesting along with four more dalit research scholars against the suspension of them after an alleged clash with ABVP leaders, committed suicide on Sunday, which triggered a huge row with labour minister Bandaru Dattatreya and Union HRD minister Smriti Irani. The ministers were blamed for the incident and came under strong attack from their political rivals.

Mean while, a judicial commission was set up by the Union HRD ministry to look into the sequence of events resulting in the suicide of Rohith, on the basis of the fact-finding team’s report.

In Hyderabad, demand for resignation of Appa Rao, the university vice chancellor grew big. Students are denying ending the agitation unless there is an approval from the Centre to remove Mr Appa Rao from his post. They are being backed by several student union members from states like Delhi and Tamil Nadu, in this 'fight for justice'.

On Thursday, the suspension of four dalit PhD scholars was revoked by the Hyderabad University. These four were suspended along with Rohith Vemula.
