Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made his mark in India's political history on Tuesday by becoming the longest-serving elected Prime Minister, surpassing the previous record held by Jawaharlal Nehru. This achievement led to numerous congratulatory messages from leaders around the world, who recognized his impactful governance within the country and his increasing global presence. Since taking office in May 2014 and winning a third consecutive term in 2024, PM Modi has guided India through significant economic and social transformations. During his leadership, India has emerged as the fifth-largest economy in the world, gained involvement in major global diplomatic discussions, and established itself as a leading voice for developing nations.

One of the first congratulatory messages came from Anura Kumara Disanayaka, President of Sri Lanka. In a letter dated June 8, he described the achievement as proof of both Modi's time in office and the repeated faith the people of the largest democracy have in his leadership. Sri Lanka holds particular significance in PM Modi's foreign policy history as he has visited the country four times, with the most recent visit in April 2025, where he received the Mitra Vibhushana, Sri Lanka’s highest honor for a foreign official. India's vital assistance during Sri Lanka's severe economic crisis in 2022 is a key aspect of their relationship.

From a different part of the world, Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister James Marape shared a personal video message, referring to PM Modi as "a role model and an example of leadership. " He highlighted the significant achievement of lifting over 200 million people in India out of poverty. PM Modi's visit to Papua New Guinea in May 2023, which was the first by an Indian Prime Minister for the FIPIC-III Summit, demonstrated India's commitment to Pacific Island nations and the wider agenda of the Global South. Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, also praised PM Modi, stating that "under his leadership, India has become a prominent voice on international issues. " She emphasized his rise from humble beginnings to leading a country of 1.4 billion people during three terms, a story that has resonated with many. PM Modi's visit to Trinidad and Tobago in July 2025 marked the first Indian Prime Ministerial visit in 26 years, coinciding with the 180th anniversary of Indian indentured workers arriving in the Caribbean.

The messages of congratulations indicate a broader acknowledgment of how PM Modi has changed India's position from a regional player to a critical participant in global economic and political matters. As the Prime Minister reaches this important milestone, the focus now shifts to what lies ahead in his third term for a nation with clear ambitions for growth.
