Indian couple end up in hospital after pool jump February 04, 2014 15:56

A young couple landed in hospital after a pool jump led to a freak accident in Australia. The victims are Indian IT students in Australia, who probably knocked their heads while diving into the swimming pool. The victims were critically injured when discovered at the WaterMarc aquatic centre at Greensborough in Melbourne. Victoria Police stated that the woman may have dived in to save her drowning boyfriend. At present, the victims are in the intensive care unit of a hospital in the locality, added the police. According to reports, the couple live together in Preston area, and had come to Australia two years ago. The 23-year-old woman was discovered and rescued first. She was found floating face down and fully dressed. Her 22-year-old boyfriend was found at the bottom of the pool while she was being treated. The man had suffered a cardiac arrest. NRI pilgrims to Amarnath to have special registration facility February 03, 2014 17:19

Amarnath Yatra for non-resident Indians (NRI) will become easier this year. NRI pilgrims can now avail of a special registration facility for the annual Amarnath pilgrimage that begins from June 28 this year. Naveen Choudhary, CEO of Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) stated that in view of a sizable number of NRI pilgrims visiting the holy shrine, the board has established a special registration facility. The yatra, which starts from June 28 and lasts till August 10, is a 44-day annual pilgrimage to south Kashmir which houses the cave shrine of Lord Shiva in the Himalayas. An NRI pilgrim will have to submit scanned copies of filled Application Form, scanned photographand a Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC). The Yatra Permit can be collected from Punjab National Bank (PNB) at Jammu or Srinagar at the designated branch, which pilgrims would indicate in the Application form. Indian worker executed in Saudi Arabia January 31, 2014 17:56

An Indian worker was beheaded in Saudi Arabia on Thursday for the murder of his Saudi sponsor. Muhammad Latif had been convicted for the murder of Dhafir Al-Dossari, by a local court in the Gulf kingdom. According to reports from the Interior Ministry, during a dispute Latif had killed the Saudi sponsor by hitting him fatally with an iron rod. After that he reportedly hid the victim's dead body in an an abandoned well. Earlier the court had postponed Latif's execution till the time Dhafir's minor sons are old enough to consent to the execution verdict. Saudi Arabia strictly follows Shariah law, which sentences crimes related to murder, rape, drug trafficking, apostasy and armed robbery with death sentence. NRI Mom murders daughter, tries suicide in Florida January 29, 2014 12:59

A 17-year-old high school student was shot dead by her mother in a case of what seems to be attempted murder-suicide. On Monday morning Chetana Guduru, a student at Seminole High School in Orlando, Florida, was found critically wounded lying in her mother's bed. The teenager died after a few hours at Orlando Regional Medical Center. The woman, Sujatha Guduru, was lying near to the bed with a gunshot wound in her chest. Sujatha survived but is still hospitalized. The 44-year-old woman has been booked for first-degree murder and remains guarded at the Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she is recuperating, said Oviedo police. When Sujatha recovers she will be shifted to the Orange County Jail, after that in most probability the accused would be handed over to Seminole County Jail. According to police record Sujatha had the murder-suicide plan for quite some time (few weeks ago) and got the .38-caliber revolver for the purpose a fortnight ago. The woman even sent an email to her brother, Prasad Chittaluru, of her plan, but no reason was offered. It was he who rushed to their Farmingham Court home in the Waverlee Woods and found both of them with gunshot wounds, following which he made an emergency 911 call. NRI in-laws take woman to tantrik for pregnancy January 27, 2014 17:50

A 28-year-old woman has filed a complaint to police in Surat on Wednesday alleging that she suffered injury from a tantrik to whom her NRI in-laws had taken to. The women named Falguni Patel was taken to the tantrik as she had suffered miscarriage a number of times since her marriage. The victim alleged that the tantrik stuffed her mouth with cloth and caused injury by branding her back with hot iron rod. Based on the complaint by the victim, the the in-laws have been arrested by police. In the police complaint, Falguni stated that she lives in Asta village near Kamrej with her husband Pinakin and her her in-laws Daksha and Jayanti Patel reside in the US. The victim said that after her marriage she suffered repeated miscarriage and her in-laws blame her for the high cost of medication incurred. So, Falguni was taken to the tantrik to ensure her successful pregnancy by Jayanti's brother Rajendra and wife Sushila (residing in India). That is when the tantrik injured Falguni. Apparently, Falguni's in-laws held her responsible for miscarriage and demanded a dowry of Rs 5 lakh. The in-laws have been arrested by the police and investigations in the case has started. An Indian-Canadian woman was on Wednesday stabbed by a man during a carjacking incident in Canada's Winnipeg city in Manitoba province. The incident took place around 6 am when the Parmjeet Kaur was brushing off snow from her vehicle at Marbury Road in West Kildonan. The 30-year-old victim was stabbed by the man after which he drove away her car, reported CBC News on Thursday. However, Parmjeet pulled out Komalpreet, her seven-year-old daughter, from the car before the unknown man took off with her car. Kaur reportedly said that the carjacker was unknown to her. He just approached her and wanted the car keys. On being refused the man stabbed her lower body with a knife. Komalpreet, who had been watching the entire scene from the side window, said she was very scared that her mother would be hurt. India launches awareness campaign for women marrying NRIs January 17, 2014 16:13

With an aim to prevent fraudulent marriages, India government has launched an awareness campaign for women who are about to marry overseas Indians. Pamphlets have been published, informing the would-be-brides about the safeguards available in case of desertation, said an official release on Thursday. The pamphlet titled " Marriages to Overseas Indians" have been published in various languages - English, Hindi, Punjabi, Malayalam and Telugu. An English booklet containing information related to safeguards available to deserted women by overseas Indian men has also been published. It has valuable information covering legal remedies, the appropriate redressal authorities they can approach, as well as information on the social organisations that could be of assistance to the bereaved women. Even earlier the government has taken steps like extension of legal and financial assistance to women deserted by their overseas Indian spouses. Death to Indian man for murdering fellow countryman January 16, 2014 16:07

An Indian man was given death sentence by a court in Dubai for murdering a fellow Indian by strangulating him to death. The 28-year-old accused then dumped the victim's body in a carton box and left it at the garbage. According to reports, the accused NS (identified by his initials) had given 8,500 dirhams (almost USD 2300) to the victim that had to be returnrd in three instalments. Last year, on May 22 the two men met to talk about the debt at the accused man's house in Dubai's Deira area. Media report suggest that the men began to argue and soon started fighting. The defendant then took a rope lying around and strangulated the victim, said a witness to the court. The accused kept strangulating the victim till he was lifeless, the witness added. The dead body of the victim was discovered by the on-duty Indian security guard at the building. When he first saw the carton box near the garbage bins he didn't pay attention to it. Later, the next morning when the carton was still lying around he opened it and saw the dead body. The security guard said he informed police thereafter. The accused was arrested by police on May 23 based on the finger prints found at the spot. He was arrested just two days before his flight was due for India. Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy has asked NRIs to invest in the state stating that labour unrest is no longer a problem. He enjoined private firms to come and invest in the state. Chandy while speaking at the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas said that labour problem is a thing of the past. Now labourers realize that they have to be cooperative for industry to grow, Chandy added while adding that Kerala is among the fast-growing IT destinations in the country. The Kerala CM said that big IT companies have opened their centres in Kerala and even TCS has taken a decision to open a global training centre in the state recently. He also said that one percent of the state budget has been earmarked for youth entrepreneurs. The chief minister of Kerala was appreciative of non-resident Keralites for their huge contribution to the state's all-round development and added that Kerala' foreign remittance is over Rs 75,000 crores at present. NRI court to open in Punjab soon January 09, 2014 16:20

NRI cases would soon be dealt in Punjab after an approval to set up an exclusive court was granted to the state government by the High Court of Punjab and Haryana. The NRI court would be the first-of-its-kind, according to reports. The state Cabinet would discuss the proposal at the next meeting before it gets a green signal, said Bikram Singh Majithia, Punjab's Minister for Revenue and NRI Affairs. The minister, who was attending the 12th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, reportedly said that the proposal would fulfil NRIs 50- year-old demand that a fast-track courts should deal with cases that involve them. Majithia while expressing concern about the rise in cases of NRI's being attacked overseas urged the Union External Affairs Ministry to deal strongly with countries where such instances take place. He also suggested that the External Affairs Ministry should try to create awareness about the Sikh culture as attacks on Sikhs have been on the rise. Indian-American doctor to pay 400K dollars to resolve fraud case January 08, 2014 15:41

An Indian-American doctor has been asked to pay $400,000 for committing fraud in billing an insurance programme of the government. According to reports, Florida-based Ravi Sharma will pay the amount to settle allegations upon himself and his clinic for violating federal laws by false claims made over vein injections and physician office visits that were not performed by qualified personnel. Sharma, who had been alleged under the False Claims Act, agreed to pay the penalty amount inorder to settle the case, announced the justice department on Monday. Stuart Delery, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department's Civil Division, stated that invasive procedures like vein injections should not be performed by unqualified personnel. The US would not tolerate such acts of negligence that places patients' at health risk, he added. During the years 2009 and 2010, Sharma operated clinics (owned by himself), which also included a weight loss centre, in the Tampa area. The doctor instructed his office manager through texts to give varicose vein injections to patients when he was not present in office. According to government allegations, Sharma performed unnecessary procedures like vein injections and ultrasound imaging related to vein injections. Even at his weight loss facility, Sharma billed Medicare for physician office visits when in reality patients had been treated by unqualified personnel. Patti Lovell, Sharma's former office manager, filed a lawsuit against the doctor under False Claims Act's whistleblower provisions. The act allows private parties to sue someone on government's behalf for submitting false claims and they get rewarded with a share of the recovery amount. Lovell will be paid $72,000 under the act.
