Devyani Khobragade's arrest and treatment thereafter by law enforcement officials in US led to a diplomatic tangle between India and the US. To diffuse the diplomatic tension US secretary of state John Kerry on Wednesday called up Shivshankar Menon, India's national security adviser, to express regret over the harsh treatment meted out to her. During the conversation Kerry expressed his concern to Menon that the unfortunate diplomatic issue should not affect India's close and vital relationship with US.
The US administration, however, was very clear that it was justified for the reasons behind the arrest and had regrets only for harsh treatment meted out to diplomat Devyani Khobragade. On Wednesday, Khobragade was transferred to India's UN mission in New York for extending full diplomatic immunity to her, thereby providing complete protection from prosecution.
Khobragade is a mid-level official at the Indian consulate in New York and enjoys limited diplomatic immunity. The Indian diplomat was arrested on charges of visa fraud. The issue snowballed out of control when reports of her being handcuffed and strip-searched like hardcore criminals came to light.
