As per data from the Union Health Ministry, India's active caseload of Covid-19 increased to 1,828 on Monday. Additionally, one death was recorded in Kerala, the state where the Covid sub-variant JN.1 was recently detected. The number of individuals who have recovered from the infection has now reached 4.46 crore (4,44,69,931), resulting in a national recovery rate of 98.81 percent. The Health Ministry also reported that 5,33,317 people have lost their lives to Covid-19, with a case fatality rate of 1.19 percent. Furthermore, the country has administered 220.67 crore doses of the Covid-19 vaccine thus far.
On Sunday, India reported 335 new Covid-19 infections, bringing the number of active cases to 1,701. The Health Ministry data revealed five deaths, with four occurring in Kerala and one in Uttar Pradesh. According to a senior official from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a case of the Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 was detected in a 79-year-old woman from Kerala during routine surveillance conducted by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) on Saturday, December 16.
Dr. Rajiv Bahl, the head of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), confirmed that the sample had yielded a positive result on November 18 using the RT-PCR test. Additionally, he noted that the woman had experienced mild symptoms resembling Influenza Like Illness (ILI) and has since made a full recovery from Covid-19. In a separate statement, Kerala's Health Minister, Veena George, assured the public that the JN.1 sub-variant of Covid-19 detected in the state should not be a source of worry.
