The casualties reported in Narendra Modi political tsunami are record-high. The ones to have survived the spate are Jayalalitha’s AIADMK, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal.
Now the question is, in the midst of all-prevailing Modi Mania, how these regional leaders managed to hold their ground, sweeping an overwhelming majority of seats in their respective states?
One of the explanations could be that the BJP isn’t traditionally strong in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Orissa. But is that the only reason why these states survived the BJP outpour? Not really, we presume.
Also, like the BJP, all these three leaders have been staunchly opposed to Congress led UPA, which now faces existential threat posy 2014 Lok Sabha election results.
The Modi wave has been overwhelming enough to reduce the size of the grand old party to below 50 seats, less than half its previous worst tally of 114 in 1999 and below the 54 seat benchmark which would have allowed its parliamentary party leader to occupy the office of the Leader of the Opposition.
But it isn't Modi alone who has caused much of the damage. Jaya, Mamata and Naveenare equally responsible for Congress' overthrow today.
The corrupt and inept UPA government has impactyed anyone associated with it. Closely associated regional parties like the Nationalist Congress Party, National Conference, the DMK, the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party have all been wiped out.
The wretched show of the UPA government in the Lok Sabha elections 2014 coupled with Rahul’s incompetent leadership has wiped off dynasty politics from the face of Indian politics.
In the 16th Lok Sabha, both the government and the opposition will be led by non-Congress formations. Congress' incapability to cross the 54 seat has reduced Rahul Gandhi or whoever else leads the Congress in Parliament to TMC, AIADMK and BJD's stature in Parliament. It is probable that these three regional parties who have been toying with the idea of forming a Federal Front, could form a powerful bloc in Parliament. TUnitedly, they have almost 90 seats, which is double the number of Congress.
If the Congress decides to continue under Rahul Gandhi’s highly disappointing leadership, the Congress may lose the opposition space in Parliament to the Federal Front and to Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party in the streets.
No matter how infallible, there will come a time sometime in the future, after a long honeymoon phase, when Narendra Modi and his government will make a mistake. But if it continues under the leadership of Rahul, the Congress might not be in a state to pounce on the opportunity then.
It's high-time, Congress realized it's follies and began preparing for the next war ahead!
