For the first time ever, Google Maps will be now available in Hindi, but only for devices running on Android and desktop/PC version of Google Maps. iOS users can only avail English.

Thanks to the new Google Maps update, users can now check names of cities, areas, roads and landmarks in Hindi.

To view the map in Hindi, users must enable Hindi as the preferred language on their devices. For the desktop version of the app, users must click on the settings wheel at the bottom prior to changing language preference to Hindi.

Not just Hindi, users can now read the map in other regional languages like Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam too. But, unlike Hindi, not all places will be displayed in regional languages.

Android users can simply select Hindi from the ‘Language and input’ menu from their phone’s settings.

Google’s press statement says that “the new labels visible on Google Maps today have been created by transliterating English names to Hindi, or, translating the English names to Hindi and ensuring the text resonated with local dialects.”
