The Supreme Court on Friday granted Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal interim bail till June 1 in a money laundering case related to Delhi's liquor ban policy. He is expected to be released from Tihar Jail today and has been asked to hand over to prison authorities by June 2. A bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Dutta passed the order after a brief hearing on Mr Kejriwal's application for interim bail. The petition filed by Mr Kejriwal was challenging his arrest in the Delhi liquor policy case and his subsequent application for interim bail to enable him to contest the Lok Sabha elections. The move will boost the AAP's electoral prospects as Kejriwal will be able to contest for the party in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, especially in Delhi and Punjab states where the party is in power. Delhi and Punjab will vote on May 25 and June 1 respectively.
Mr. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 and is currently lodged in Tihar Jail in Delhi.
