An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, and West Bengal on September 12, an India Meteorological Department official said.

Around the same time, a mild earthquake was felt at Jammu and Kashmir. The quake measured 4.6 on the Richter scale and occurred at 5.15 in the morning. No damage to property or life was reported.

The epicenter of the quake was located 199 km north of Kargil town in the frontier Ladakh region of the state.

No casualties have been reported so far from the quakes in the northeast, Bihar and West Bengal, police said.

The quake lasted around 15 to 20 seconds and was felt around 10.20 am. The magnitude of the quake was recorded at 5.5 on the Richter scale, according to a report of the Central Seismological Observatory in Shillong.

Its epicenter was 2 km north of Kokrajhar town in Assam and at a depth of 10 km, it said.

The tremor was felt in six northern districts of West Bengal as well as the metropolis and its surrounding districts.

Tremors were also felt in parts of Bangladesh.
