Four Indian teachers were reportedly kidnapped from Sirte town near Tripoli in Libya allegedly by the Islamic State terror group, on Thurday evening. Out of the four, two are from Hyderabad, one belongs to Raichur and one is from Bengaluru.
The ministry of external affairs, said that teachers have been teaching at the university for a year. However, no ransom demand was made yet. The area from where Indian teachers were kidnapped is under control of the Islamic State. Seizing large swathes of Iraq and Syria, the Islamic State has declared itself as caliphate.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said, "We came to know at 11 pm that four Indian nationals who were returning to India via Tripoli were detained at a checkpoint approximately 50 km from Sirte."
"According to our sources all four were brought back to Sirte. We are in regular touch with their families and all efforts are being made to ensure their early release," Mr Swarup added.
In July last year, the Indian Government issued an advisory urging Indian Citizens not to be a part of the conflict-hit Libya. According to officials, the fact that they began working last year suggest that the warning has been ignored.
