Politics Around AP Floods

Both the telugu states Telangana and Andhra Pradesh were continuously hit with heavy rains. Several districts in both the states are on high alert. Many places have been isolated because of the flood-hit due to heavy rainfall. Several people died across both states. The floods continue to disrupt the states with connectivity and day to day activities. In Telangana on 2nd September 99 trains have been cancelled and 54 trains have been diverted because of the waterlogs on the railway tracks. Telangana Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy was in public throughout the day and even got injured while he was inspecting the flood hit regions. He said that nine persons have lost their lives and many have lost their livelihood, like sheep and cattle. Water also wiped off the agricultural lands. But opposition leaders are still not happy with the government rescue operations and taking a strong dig on social media. In Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has visited the flood-affected regions. He said that 17,000 people were affected and were shifted to the 107 relief camps. In Andhra Pradesh alone, 1.1 lakh hectares of agricultural fields and 7,360 hectares of horticultural fields were damaged due to the continuous downpour.

In Andhra Pradesh, 21 trains were cancelled and 10 were diverted according to the Southern Central Railway. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have called both the chief ministers of Telugu states and inquired about the situation. 26 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in the Telugu states. In both the states collectors are working continuously on relief and rescue operations in the flood-hit regions. Andhra Pradesh opposition leader YS Jagan has visited the flood areas in Vijayawada. He alleged that the state government has ignored the extreme rain alerts and did not take any precautionary measures. Jagan visited Ajith Singhnagar and also a few regions in Vijayawada and interacted with the victims. He alleged that the weather department issued an extreme rainfall alert on the 28th of August for the Guntur and NTR districts along with a few Telangana districts like Khammam, Nalgonda and the Krishna catchment area. He alleged that despite knowing the information prior, governments have failed to take proper measures such as shifting the public to safe places.

Jagan also alleged that the floods happened because of the lack of maintenance of the flood cushion, that is by letting all the water from the Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar dams downstream. Jagan called the floods as man-made floods and these statements have raised controversy among the public, while many criticized the statements because of the timing, as the states is in severe crisis.
