Each year on June 19, India celebrates National Reading Day in honor of Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker (P.N. Panicker), a visionary instrumental in cultivating a reading culture in Kerala. Revered as the “Father of the Library and Literacy Movement,” Panicker devoted his life to enhancing literacy and empowering communities through literature. His relentless endeavors established a knowledge-driven society that continues to motivate future generations to appreciate the transformative benefits of reading.

While the nationwide observance of Reading Day is a relatively new concept, Kerala has recognized P.N. Panicker’s contributions since 1996. The state designated June 19, the anniversary of Panicker's death in 1995, as a memorial to his influential role in advancing literacy in Kerala. In 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi elevated the status of this day, proclaiming it National Reading Day and broadening its observance across the nation. This day is dedicated to acknowledging Panicker’s unmatched commitment to fostering universal literacy in Kerala. As a teacher, Panicker led a grassroots library movement during the early to mid-20th century, dramatically increasing the public's access to books and knowledge. His drive to encourage reading among the populace fundamentally shaped Kerala into one of India’s most literate states. Through his initiative in creating public libraries, he earned the enduring title of “Father of the Library and Literacy Movement.”

The first library he opened to the public was established in 1926 under the name “Sanadanadharmam Library.” The many public libraries he established in the following years helped pave the way for the creation of the Travancore Library Association in 1945. Initially consisting of 47 community libraries, this association eventually transformed into the Kerala Granthsala Sangham (KGS). Following Kerala's attainment of statehood in 1956, the KGS expanded significantly, incorporating nearly 6,000 libraries. Ultimately, it was restructured as the Kerala State Library Council after coming under the Kerala government's stewardship in 1977.

National Reading Day 2025 presents an ideal opportunity to reignite one’s passion for reading or cultivate it for the first time. It serves as a wonderful chance to unite individuals with shared interests in building a network of readers. The focus of National Reading Day is on the crucial role that books and their inherent wisdom play in the comprehensive development of humanity.
