During a second wave of significant protests against President Donald Trump and his stringent policies, thousands of demonstrators flooded the streets in multiple cities throughout the United States on Saturday, chanting slogans and displaying signs. The most recent protest, which marked the first of its kind since Trump assumed office in January, took place on April 5 and was titled the 'Hands Off' protests. In New York City, individuals congregated outside the main library, vocalizing chants like “No kings in America” and “Resist tyranny.” Many demonstrators criticized Trump's initiative to deport undocumented immigrants, shouting, “No ICE, no fear, immigrants are welcome here.” The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has been authorized to track down undocumented individuals and send them back to their home countries.
In Washington, protesters accused the President of undermining well-established constitutional principles in the United States, which encompass the right to due process. A 41-year-old protester shared with AFP that the Trump administration was launching an attack on the concept of the rule of law and the belief that the government should refrain from mistreating its residents. Holding a placard advocating for the release of Mahmoud Khalil, a pro-Palestinian student who was detained the previous month, this protester claimed that the administration was using individuals as “test cases to incite xenophobia.”
Another participant, Kathy Valy, aged 73 and the daughter of Holocaust survivors, expressed her concern over the current situation, stating they were in “great danger” and drawing parallels to the rise of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, saying, “What happened then is what’s happening here.” She remarked, “The one thing is that Trump is a lot more stupid than Hitler or other fascists. He’s being manipulated… and his own administration is fractured.” In Texas, a traditionally conservative state, the coastal city of Galveston experienced a modest gathering of anti-Trump demonstrators.
