Emergency was imposed in India by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975 on June 25th. Now Prime Minister Narendra Modi has remembered ‘Emergency’, calling those days as the darker days of the Indian democracy.
As Narendra Modi is travelling to the United States of America next week, he talked on the radio on June 18th as part of his monthly talks in a radio broadcast for 102nd episode of “Mann Ki Baat” . He mentioned the “Emergency Era” as the “Dark Period” and stated that the country cannot forget the emergency period.

Narendra Modi mentioned India as the mother of Democracy. We cannot forget the day emergency was imposed on us, the supporters of democracy were tortured. He subsequently mentioned his “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava”. We should mention our darker days like the Emergency, which will teach the meaning and importance of democracy to the younger generations, said Modi.

At his Mann Ki Baat, he also lauded the people of Kutch for their strength in facing cyclone Biparjoy, which originated from the Arabian Sea and created havoc in Kutch. He mentioned that India has increased its capacity to face natural disasters and he also asked the public to practice yoga every day. Modi also claims that India will be a tuberculosis (TB) free country by 2025.
