The farmers protesting are observing a Bharat Bandh today, which is being supported by eminent personalities across the state, activists and is hosted by opposing parties across states in the country. The protest might end up bringing the nation to a total standstill on Tuesday.
The farmers are protesting in lieu of the central government passing three laws which insists in more private companies and corporate participation in the agricultural sector, decreasing and having a negative impact on the revenue for farmers. Farmers are contentiously protesting after several rounds of talks with the Centre who failed to bring any results as farmers are firm on their stands.
The nationwide strike is expected to have a major impact on the country as several major political parties and labour unions have extended support to the Bharat Bandh. The Union Home Ministry issued advisories asking all the states and union territories to ensure the law and order is maintained during the Bharat Bandh. Destruction of public property and damage or harm to citizens and buildings is prevented at all costs. The Centre has also asked states to ensure that all COVID-19 guidelines are followed during the protest.
Farmers are camping at Delhi borders and have said that they will occupy toll plazas outside Delhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi defended the three contentious farm laws and said reforms are essential for the development of a nation and that the old laws are a burden. He also stated that the laws will have a positive impact on the farmers.
Opposing political leaders are opposing the laws in their respective states in lieu of the farmers’ protest.
