The Winter Games flagged off to a magnanimous start last evening amidst a montage of dreamlike imagery and high-tech pageantry in the Fisht Olympic Stadium, save for a few embarrassing glitches that left Mr. Putin and his country red-faced.

Minutes into the ceremony in Sochi, and much to the horror of the organizers, one of the five snowflakes (meant to be a part of the Olympic ring) refused to open up, leading a planned pyrotechnic display to be called off and the Olympic symbol incomplete.

But that wasn't the only embarrassment. Even amid the reprehensively homophobic cult of oppression Russia is currently propagating, things seem to be to going a little bit gay on the arena.

Besides yesterday's rainbow-patterned Google Doodle, the German Olympian's rainbow striped uniforms, Sochi volunteer's equally bright and colorful suits, seven participating athletes from the LGBT community, LGBT allies, drag queens, faux-lesbian Russian pop group t.A.T.u, and the much-booed ski-slope design that have compelled detractors to stand up and notice what is Russia upto in the Sochi Winter Olympics 2014?
