Flights to Russia face threat from toothpaste bombs ahead of the Sochi Olympics, warned the US government. On Wednesday the US government warned American and foreign airlines of possible terrorist threat from explosives hidden in toothpaste tubes on flights headed towards Russia for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The Games will be inaugurated on Friday and the US Department of Homeland Security
issued the warnings ahead of mega event.
Washington is cautious about the security at the Sochi Games, especially after two powerful suicide attacks in December in Russia's southern city of Volgograd. US concerns about the security at Sochi was further intensified due to a series of threats from Islamic militants in the northern Caucasus region that remains volatile.
Americans have been issued a travel alert for Russia by the US State Department asking them to remain alert at all times during the Games. Beside, the participating athletes have been discourage to wear Team USA logos outside the venues of the Sochi Olympic.
The Games will conclude on February 23. Meanwhile, top US counter-terrorism official have suggested that the areas outside Sochi and its tight-security venues face the greatest threat from terrorist elements.
