2013 proved to be a milestone year for gay right activists across the globe with several countries legalizing same-sex marriage. And if the prayers of the members of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community gets answered with the Supreme Court of India all set to dole out its crucial verdict on Section 377 of the IPC, today might as well turn to be yet another momentous day for the gay right champions not only in the country, but worldwide.

Although the Indian High Court legitimized homosexuality in 2009, the decision was later challenged in the SC by petitioners, including NAZ Foundation, parents of LGBT persons and others, had challenged the constitutional validity of Section 377. All hopes are now pinned on the apex court of India to uphold HC verdict and legalize gay marriage.

LGBT activists had celebrated the Delhi High Court's decision as a "historic first" in India in their effort to fight for their rights. "Now, we are waiting with bated breath and keeping our fingers crossed for the SC verdict," Ashok Row Kavi, a prominent LGBT rights activist said.

Row Kavi is first person to openly discuss homosexuality and gay rights in India. His first 'coming out' interview was published way back in 1986.

"The judgment will be extremely important and the mood really is quite expectant," said Ashok Row Kavi, adding that the momentum had been building for several years now.
