Facebook got its name updated to Meta and the social media giant announced that it will no longer use facial-recognition software which was planned to identify the faces of the users through images and video clips. Facebook acquired the identities or Face Scans of a billion people and the social media giant decided to delete them now. As per the update, 640 million users have opted for the facial recognition setting. Jerome Pesenti, vice president of artificial intelligence for Meta told "This change will represent one of the largest shifts in facial recognition usage in the technology's history. Amid this ongoing uncertainty, we believe that limiting the use of facial recognition to a narrow set of use cases is appropriate".

This move will represent one of the largest shifts in the facial recognition usage in the history of technology. As per the reports, more than one-third of the daily users of Facebook opted to use Face Recognition. The individual facial recognition templates of more than a billion people will now be removed. This change will also have an impact on the Automatic Alt Text (AAT) which is used to create the image descriptions for the visually-impaired and blind people. AAT descriptions will now function normally told Facebook. The company took the move considering the growing social concerns.
