Frank McDonough , a botanical information consultant of Arboretum and Botanic Garden thinks that a mix of fragrant plants can help one be lucky in love this Valentine’s Day.

“Scent has a very big effect on our memories, some good and some not so good. That’s why I always tell people who entertain to pick a fragrant flower or plant to display because they help trigger memories,” he said. “Scents may have certain roundabout attractions we may not realize.”

The concept is behind the arboretum’s sold-out “Love Potions”. It initially began as a perfume trip through the expansive grounds, but gradually became an excursion  of its own a couple of years ago to attract couples for the holiday.

McDonough, said dried passion flower is often used to help people sleep, but seem to increase romantic thoughts in mice. Cattleya orchids, on other hand, attracts attention by their fine scent.

“Scents can help you relax, escape and remember good times, they can capture your attention and affect your feelings.” Said Rachel Young of Descanso garden in La Canada Flintridge.

When designing a scent garden, location is important. Young suggested positioning some plants where gardeners can brush up on patios near windows. Some of her favorites include the hearty holy like shrub “sweet olive” or osmanthus, sweet-smelling jasmine and roses.
