Colorado’s very own Jack Sparrow, Dante Martinez does not want to think about the end of "Pirates of the Caribbean” series.
Beside being a DJ at a nightclub and running a talent agency in Colorado Springs, he impersonates Captain Jack Sparrow. He gets paid to dress up as Jack Sparrow at birthday parties, weddings and festivals.
Martinez has been portraying the famous character from the popular movie franchise played by Johnny Depp for the past 12 years and it has helped pay his bills.
Martinez said that it would be a shame if all of a sudden Jack Sparrow became a ghost.
"It'd be a shame if all of a sudden Jack Sparrow became a ghost," Martinez said.
Only time will tell.
The "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" is the fifth installment in the series and mostly got bad reviews. Still, Jack Sparrow fans across the Untied States came out in costume to support the fantasy movie.
Martinez, along with Elope Inc., a local costume business and GalaxyFest, a sci-fiction and pop-culture organization hosted a "Pirates of the Caribbean"-themed event at AMC Classic on Thursday. The event featured games, prizes and a costume contest to accompany a screening of the new film.
Soon after the first installment of the franchise came out, Martinez was performing in the Gilbert and Sullivan Victorian-era comic opera "The Pirates of Penzance" at the Fine Arts Center when a person told him that he looked like Jack Sparrow.
"Next thing you know, it kind of stuck," he said.
During his time playing the witty character, he found many other who share the same passion as he does of cosplay. A few years ago, he met Aaron LePage, dressed up as Will turner, portrayed by Orlando Bloom, at the Colorado Renaissance Festival.
They became close friends and, in 2010, LePage had a "Pirates"-themed wedding and Martinez officiated dressed as Jack Sparrow.
"Honestly, the biggest thing to enjoy about dressing up is the people who enjoy us doing it," LePage said. "When you see the faces of little children, and even adults, light up, it's magical. It gets to the barnacles of your heart."
