Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi has stated that women should be punished for sex outside marriage. Such women should be hanged, and this punishment goes for rape victims as well, reported Mid-Day.

Azmi was asked to comment on Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's controversial comment.

Mulayam while addressing a rally in Moradabad had said "rape accused should not be hanged. Men make mistakes."

Azmi while defending Mulayam said that in Islam rape is punishable by hanging. But in India nothing happens to women, are also guilty. Only men are punished, Azmi said.

Abu Azmi when asked for a solution to the problem of rape said that any woman, whether married or unmarried, who has sex with a man, with or without her consent, should be hanged. He also specified that even if the woman has sex with consent, she should be hanged.
