Last week, Dr. S Jaishankar, the Minister of External Affairs, unveiled the launch of the e-passport initiative as part of the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) 2.0 throughout India. This initiative, which began as a pilot in select cities, marks a significant move towards creating a comprehensive Digital India framework for travelers. "In keeping with the Government of India's dedication to enhancing citizen-focused services, I am pleased to announce that we have implemented PSP V2.0 nationwide. This will utilize cutting-edge technologies," stated Dr. Jaishankar. An e-passport, or electronic passport, integrates both a traditional paper format and electronic features, equipped with a chip that enhances security and streamlines processing. This passport incorporates a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip alongside an inlay antenna. The chip securely holds the personal data and biometric information of the holder. To differentiate it from standard passports, a small gold symbol appears beneath the front cover.
Individuals interested in obtaining an e-passport should visit the official Passport Seva Platform and adhere to the following steps:
- Access the official Passport Seva website.
- New users must create an account, whereas returning users can log in directly.
- Complete the e-passport application and schedule an appointment at either a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK).
- Submit the payment for the e-passport.
- Attend your appointment at the PSK or POPSK at the designated time for biometric data collection and document verification.
Advantages of an e-passport include:
Improved security: The chip, placed on the passport's front cover, securely holds vital information such as your name, passport number, date of birth, and biometric data, including your photograph and fingerprints.
Tamper-resistant: Thanks to their advanced encryption and secure chip technology, e-passports are much harder to forge or duplicate.
Contactless reading: Immigration personnel can efficiently access the chip without needing to fully open the passport or scan a barcode.
Worldwide acceptance: As they meet international standards, these passports can be utilized globally, facilitating seamless travel.
