A hiker from Brazil has tragically lost her life after falling from a cliff while hiking on an active volcano in Indonesia, as confirmed by her family and local authorities. Juliana Marins, 26, was reportedly stuck for four days after falling into the volcano and was found deceased on Tuesday. Indonesian officials stated that she slipped and fell approximately 490 feet down the cliff face on Saturday morning while trekking with friends on Mount Rinjani. This volcano, located on the island of Lombok, stands over 12,000 feet tall and is a well-known tourist attraction in the Southeast Asian region. The accident occurred around 6:30 AM local time as Marins was making her way to the summit, according to a news release from Gunung Rinjani National Park.

After her fall, drone footage indicated she was still alive despite initial cries for assistance, as reported by The NYP. However, heavy fog and other challenging conditions made it impossible for rescue teams to reach her. Muhammad Hariyadi, the local rescue leader, noted that she became trapped in soft sand, complicating efforts to pull her out with ropes. Rescuers ultimately rediscovered Ms. Marins on Monday when drone imagery taken the following morning showed she had moved from her previous position. She was pronounced dead on Tuesday.

"The body of the Brazilian tourist was found after four days of hard work, hampered by difficult weather, terrain, and visibility," stated the Brazilian government on Tuesday. The family of Juliana Marins also issued a statement through an Instagram account created to share updates on the rescue efforts. "Today, the rescue team succeeded in reaching the area where Juliana Marins was... With great sadness, we must inform you that she did not survive," the translated message stated.
