The Calcutta High Court on Friday transferred the SIT probe into financial irregularities during former director RG Kar Sandip Ghosh's tenure to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Earlier, a Calcutta court had extended the remand of Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the university doctor RG Kar rape and murder case, by 14 days. Roy also agreed to a lie detector test. Meanwhile, the CBI plans to conduct polygraph tests on Sandeep Ghosh, former principal of RG Khar Medical College, and four other doctors in connection with the rape and murder of a postgraduate student at the hospital. The CBI had produced Ghosh and four other doctors on duty before a special court on August 9 to seek permission for a polygraph test. Such an investigation requires both judicial authorization and the consent of the suspect. The special court on Thursday agreed to the CBI's application. Meanwhile, protests by trainee doctors in government hospitals across states ended on Thursday, with major doctors' organizations calling off their 11-day strike after the Supreme Court asked them to return to work.
However, in West Bengal state, the epicenter of the protests, medical care in government hospitals continues to be affected as young doctors continue to take leave. The Sealdah court has rejected the polygraph test of former school principal Dr. Sandeep Ghosh and five others agreed. The remaining five include four doctors who dined with the deceased doctor and a citizen volunteer. On the Calcutta High Court's direction to the CBI to investigate all cases of irregularities in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar said, "The Calcutta High Court's decision should also be taken into account in this money investigation case." Calcutta Police records show that Sandeep Ghosh, principal of RG Khar Medical College, was examined on August 13 and his statement was recorded. As a trainee doctor, it was discovered that the incident was recorded three days after the rape incident. When the Supreme Court on August 9, the day of the crime, questioned the role of the former manager and directed the SIT to produce the incident diary, CCTV footage and to hand over other details to the CBI. At 10 am tomorrow, the Calcutta High Court has postponed the SIT probe into former RG Kar director Sandip Ghosh's financial irregularities during his CBI tenure.
