The INDIA coalition, which fiercely competed against the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections, has emerged victorious in the by-elections for 13 Assembly seats across seven states. The INDIA bloc has secured four seats and is leading six more. Candidates from the Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), AAP, and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) – all part of the INDIA bloc – contested the by-elections held on Wednesday in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu. In Punjab, AAP's Mohinder Bhagat won the Jalandhar West seat by over 23,000 votes. In West Bengal, TMC candidates have taken the lead in four seats, leaving the BJP behind in each constituency. Himachal Pradesh's new Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's wife, Kamlesh Thakur, made her electoral debut and won the Dehra elections. In the state, the Congress is also leading in Nalagarh, while the BJP's Ashish Sharma is ahead in Hamirpur. In West Bengal, the TMC has secured four seats, defeating BJP opponents by significant margins. In Tamil Nadu, the DMK's Anniyur Siva is leading by 58,785 votes in the Vikravandi assembly.

The recent state-level by-elections across India have seen some intriguing results. In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party has an edge in the Kairana and Manglaur constituencies, while in Madhya Pradesh, the BJP's Kamslesh Pratap Shahi is leading in Amarwara. Over in Bihar, the JD()'s Kaladhar Prasad Mandal trails an Independent candidate in the Rupauli seat. These byelections, the first since the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, have been closely watched. The BJP emerged as the single-largest party in the previous national elections, securing 240 seats, though falling short of an outright majority. However, the NDA coalition, of which the BJP is a part, managed to reach the halfway mark of 272 seats, ending up with a total of 293. The INDIA alliance, led by the Congress party, clinched 232 seats in the 2024 general elections. The counting of votes for these 13 legislative assembly constituencies, spread across seven states, commenced on Saturday morning, following the voting on Wednesday.
