Hathras Stampede: 107 killed in a Religious Event

At least 107 people, including women and children, were killed on Tuesday during a religious ceremony at a temple in Hatteras state in Uttar Pradesh, officials said. The stampede occurred during a “satsang” (prayer meeting). Footage from a community health center shows several bodies being transported by bus in front of crying relatives. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took note of the incident and on his orders a committee was formed to investigate the incident. President Draupadi Murmu also expressed condolences to the families of the victims. Defense Minister Rajnath said the incident in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh was very sad, Singh said. He said, "The local administration, under the supervision of the state government, is providing all possible assistance to all the victims." Hatteras district magistrate Ashish Kumar said that as per the district health center statistics, 50 to 60 people had lost their lives in the district. Ita regional authorities confirmed another 47 deaths.

Ita's chief physician, Dr. Umesh, said: “We received 27 bodies, 25 of which were women and two men. Some of the injured were taken to hospital. We heard that there was a rush during the Satsanga.” Kumar Tripathi. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken cognizance of this incident and on his orders, a committee has been formed to investigate this incident. President Draupadi Murmu also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. “A large number of believers gathered at the place. There was no exit and everyone collapsed and there was a huge crowd. As we tried to leave, a motorcycle was parked outside, blocking our way. Many people fainted. The victim said and that as the religious ceremony came to an end, police said it appeared that the suffocation hazard at the venue caused discomfort. It was a satsang by preacher Bhol, police added. “A temporary permit was issued Tuesday afternoon for the rally at a location on the border of Etah and Hathras districts.”
