The Indian Navy welcomed a brand new submarine INS Vela which is a French designed Scorpene-class submarine. It is built by the government owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd which is famously called as MDL. The Indian Navy issued a statement that told "The submarine's motto 'Vigilant, Valiant, Victorious' epitomizes the submarine's spirit in achieving the tasks at hand. The motto inspires the crew to the alert and prepared always to face and surmount all challenges the submarine faces and emerge triumphant every time. The association of numerous Indian companies in building the platform makes it a true representation of the 'Make in India' concept".

INS Vela is designated as 'Yard 11878' and is the fourth Scorpene-class submarine that is built by the Naval Group of France and MDL. The construction of INS Vela started in July 2009 and it was named in May 2019. Several trails of weapons, machinery and extension system are tested for INS Vela and was handed over to Indian Navy this month. INS Vela is capable with firepower under any extreme conditions to protect the Indian marine zone. A ceremony was held in Mumbai to induct INS Vela into the Navy. INS Vela can span across the entire spectrum of maritime warfare. It is equipped with sensors and advanced weapons. INS Velan is also integrated into Submarine Tactical Integrated Combat System, or SUBTICS.
