IKEA recalls ‘Made in India’ Travel Mugs

IKEA, which is a Swedish furniture retailer has recalled its made- in- India travel mugs from its stores in the United Arab Emirates and also from more than 400 stores across the world due to the concern regarding the excessive levels of chemicals in the plastic product.

The retailer of the Swedish furniture and home products has urged it customers to stop using the TROLIGTVIS travel mugs as it said on its website that no medical issues have been recorded and the initiative that has been taken regarding the made in India travel mugs is proactive and was made for the safety of its customers.

It added saying that the recent test reports has shown that the levels of chemicals exceeding the limits that are prescribed, may be migrated by the products. IKEA has also ensured the customers that the full amount will be refunded to the customers who have bought the mugs online and it the stores of IKEA.

a toll free number has been provided in India by IKEA where all the queries of the customers will be answered and it has also said that the full refund will be done to the customers who have purchased the travel mugs with no proof of purchase being required.

A report from the Khaleej Times says that the product might contain higher levels of Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) than the permissible levels. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is a substance which is used as plasticisers in order to enhance the durability and flexibility of the plastic products. The plastic products that are being sourced by IKEA are mainly from southern and western India.

IKEA operates more than 400 stores in about 50 countries and has made its launch in India in August 2018. IKEA has been sourcing the products out of India for thirty five years and the products such as rugs, textile, plastic, mattresses, sofas and metal decorative items are the products that IKEA is currently sourcing on among being the host of other items from more than 600 suppliers in the country.
