The issues on the new citizenship law and the National Register of Citizens that were proposed were reached out by the ministry of external affairs of India to the countries across the world.

“We did reach out to countries across the globe on Citizenship amendment Act and the NRC,” Raveesh Kumar, the spokesperson of MEA said at a media briefing.

Raveesh Kumar said that the citizenship amendment act is just for the religious persecuted minorities to acquire the Indian citizenship and no change in the constitution will be made.

He added saying that “we emphasised that the Act (CAA) just expedites acquiring of citizenship to persecuted minorities. It does not change the basic structure of Constitution.”

The Citizenship Amended Act that has been passed recently seeks that the non-Muslim communities i.e., Hindus, Christians, Buddists, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains from the three neighbouring countries Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh who have been facing religious persecutions there and who have come to India on or before December 31st 2014, will be given Indian citizenship.

Kumar said that, the dates for the India-Japan summit that has been postponed following the protests in Guwahati last month, will be finalized soon.
