Tens of thousands residents living in the South Jersey have received a false nuclear power plant warning on Tuesday around 9 p.m., which concerned them greatly.
"It was scary to a lot of people," said Susan Bryan of the Bridgeton, New Jersey.
Many residents admit that they were frightened by the warning, but they are thankful the warning was all a mistake as there were no problems at the Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Power Stations.
A tweet sent out by the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management said that the message was a False Emergency Alert and also confirms that it was sent out in error.
On Wednesday, the Action News spoke with Edward Conrow, Director of the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection in the Cumberland County.
"I think with any event, a weather event, they expect it, but people are a little nervous when it is related to a nuclear plant so we expected them to be scared. And that was our concern, getting the information out to lessen the impact on the public," said Conrow.
From the New Jersey State Police the Action News has learned that, the mistake happened at the time of scheduled safety training exercise.
New Jersey State Police in a statement said that, "The message was intended for a small group of emergency management personnel who were participating in the exercise. As a result of a coding error, the message was publicly broadcast. The coding error has since been identified and corrected."
Conrow said that the 911 Communications Center was inundated with number of calls.
The county immediately performed a reverse 911call and alerted the residents that the message they were seeing on TV was a mistake and not true.
State police added that, in the event of an actual emergency, the residents would receive the additional alerts, which would include the instructions such as evacuation routes and also reception centers. The alert messaging would also be broadcast on the State Police and also state and local emergency management social media accounts.
