Judge ordered to release “Black Magic” killer

A convicted Bronx killer, who is accused of using black magic to run his criminal drug gang, will walk free, after a judge vacated his sentence based on newly found evidence.

46-year-old Calvin Buari spent almost 22 years behind bars upstate. He was serving a 50 year to life sentence for the 1992 shooting death of two men as part of a drug turf war.

Dwight Robinson, another suspect confessed to the double murder in 2003, but was never prosecuted, police said. Robinson later recanted his confession.

In 2015 new witnesses came forward and claimed that they saw the person who pulled the trigger or to say Burai could not have been, according to the same source.

After continuous hearings, Eugene Oliver, who is the judge of Bronx Supreme Court reverted Buari’s 1995 conviction on Friday and ordered for his released without bail, over prosecutor’s objections.

A retired New York Police Department detective with knowledge of the case said that he was shocked to hear Buari would be back on the streets.

“This was a bad guy who hurt a lot of people by dealing drugs,” he said. “I’m surprised to see a judge would let him out on just some hearsay.”

Given that the judge’s decision came down late in the day, Buari was forced to spend two more days in Green Haven Correctional Facility before his release.

“We are deciding whether to appeal the decision or retry him,” said a spokesperson with the Bronx District Attorney’s Office.
