Indian-origin honoured with Asian Businesswoman of Year award

Indian-origin educationist Dame Asha Khemka, who moved to the United Kingdom with no skill in English language, has been named the ‘Asian Businesswoman of the year during a ceremony in Birmingham.

The 65-year-old Principal and CEO of West Nottinghamshire College was honoured for her efforts in the field of education and skill at the Asian Business Awards ceremony on Friday (7th April).

The event which took place at Edgbaston cricket ground in the city, also marked the launch of the 'Asian Rich List' for the Midlands to highlight the richest Asians in the region.

Born in Sitamarhi district, Bihar, Asha Khemka left school at the tender age of 13 and chose to no English language skill when she moved to the United Kingdom with her family at the age of 25.

She learned English all by herself by watching children’s television shows and talking to other young mothers. Later, she acquired a business degree from Cardiff University, before becoming a lecturer and eventually taking over as a principal and CEO of West Nottinghamshire College.

Asha Khemka was honoured with Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2013, which is one of the highest civilian awards in the United Kingdom.

Asha Kemka, who is mother-of-three children, is the first Indian-origin Dame since Maharani Lakshmi Devi Bai Sahiba of Dhar State in 1931.

Others, who received the Asian Business of the Year Award are, Managing Director of Reel Cinemas Kailash Suri, who won Entrepreneur of the Year and Nisthi Ismali, who is the founder of Nishti’s Choice. She was awarded for being a Community Champion.
