Webpass Bringing its Wireless Gigabit Internet to Denver

San Franciso based internet provider ‘Webpass’ which is now owned by Google Fiber announced that it would expand its services to the Denver, Colorado market. The marks the company’s first new market since Google fiber’s take over, which is itself owned by Alphabet, Inc.’s Access division, acquired the company in June last year.

Webpass is an important part of Google Fiber’s future plans. The internet service delivers internet at astonishing speeds of up to 1Gbps. Instead of laying fiber optic cable, which is a costly and time consuming process that can involve tireless negotiations with local lawmakers. The company delivers gigabit speeds through a mixture of existing wireless and Ethernet technologies.

In a brief, Webpass boosts its internet service through a central antenna that is typically located on the top of an apartment building. This is only why the company provides its services only to buildings with 10 or more units, and in some cases 30 or more units. Webpass also tackles deals from large telecoms that usually try to lock in apartment complexes with years of contacts.

So, the reason is very obvious why Google Fiber bought Webpass in the first place. Fiber, as part of Alphabet’s Access has gone through a slow rollout across the U.S. with rising costs. Alphabet CEO “Ruth Porat” initiated a cost-cutting process with divisions like Fiber, smart appliance maker Nest, and the moonshot-oriented X have been hit with executive reshuffles, budget cuts, layoffs, and even shutdowns.

In October last year Access lost around 9% of its workforce, including its CEO Craig Barratt. The company also announced it would ‘pause’ plans to launch fiber internet in nine markets. It seems that Webpass now holds more promises for Google Fiber’s ambitions that the division’s original premise of laying its own cable.

Webpass are now having job openings in the Seattle area and also announced that it is working with the Google Fiber team expand its services in existing markets to more apartment buildings.
