India-US' 11th annual strategic intelligence dialogue kicks off today in New Delhi.
The three-day dialogue will be the first high-level intelligence interaction to take place after diplomatic tensions over Devyani Khobragade stand-off. The meeting bodes well for both the states and signifies a ratcheting down of tensions after the tit-for-tat expulsions of diplomats.
Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade returned to India on Friday after being indicted by a US grand jury for alleged visa fraud. In retaliation, India asked a US diplomat of the same rank as Khobragade to leave the embassy in Delhi.
The bi-annual intelligence dialogue — primarily hosted in New Delhi in January and in Washington in June — is held between India's Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) and its US counterpart, the National Intelligence Council (NIC).
Six officials from NIC and JIC participate in the talks spanning over a range of security- related issues.
The Indian delegation is headed by Ajit Lal, chairman of the JIC, part of the National Security Council.
