Rabindranath Tagore was the first and also the only Non-European to receive the Nobel Prize in literature. Swedish embassy in India has organised the Sweden India Nobel Memorial Week to mark the centenary of Tagore's Nobel Prize.

Tagore will be at the centre of this celebration that begins on November 8. A panel discussion titled "Tagore, now!" has been organized to discuss the relevance of his poems and literary work to present day and age. A statue of Tagore and also the English translation of the original text for which he was nominated for the prestigious award has been brought from the Swedish Academy for display at the embassy.

Works of Olavi Hemmila, Swedish Tagore expert, titled "Tagore in Sweden - 1921 and 1926" was re-released this year to mark the celebration. In addition, lectures, seminars, intercollegiate quizzes and round tables discussions have been planned for the Sweden India Nobel Memorial Week 2013 in cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune.

The toils of man, it is said, are enjoyed for a lifetime, sometimes even after they leave for the heavenly abode. Gurudev as Tagore is fondly referred to, is one such luminary whose life and literary works has brought name and fame to the country.
