Car accidents are major cause of human death among teenagers. Lack of experience and their tendency to engage in unsafe behaviors such as speeding , driving aggressively, or using a cell phone while driving can now be monitored by a new smartphone app “Teen Driver Supprt System” (TDSS). Researchers at University of Minnesota have come up with this new smartphone app to keep tab on driving behavior of youngster.
“It is sort of win-win for the teenager and the parent. The parent can help their teen be safer on the road, the teen can get that valuable driving experience that they need,” Janet Creaser, researcher at the University of Minnesota, was quoted as saying in media reports.
As the TDSS is programmed in a cellphone, it is capable of providing real time feedback to parents about a teenager’s driving behavior. Thus, if a teenager receives feedback that he or she is over speeding but fails to reduce the vehicle’s speed, the app will text message the teenager’s parents to inform them of the speeding behavior.
The app also gives teenagers both visual and audio warnings. If they fail to correct their behavior ,a text message is sent to their parents.
