2013 was certainly a year of the 'selfie' with the popular term not just somersaulting into every other Instagram, Twitter and Facebook posts, but also into Oxford Dictionary. And now it has earned itself just another accolade - of being the most annoying and overused term of the past 12 months.
The word just made it to the top of the list of words Lake Superior State University want to be banned in 2014. Other most annoying words of the year that made it to the list were 'twerk', 'hashtag', 'Twittersphere', 'Mr Mom', 'T-Bone' and 'Obamacare.'

The annual list of year's most annoying words is filed on nominations by official Banished Words Facebook page. Each nomination is registered with a brief explanation of why the word is annoying or should be dropped.
According to his nomination for the word ‘selfie’, Facebook fan Bruce, from Ontario wrote: 'Named 'Word of the Year' by Oxford Dictionary? Give me a break! Ugh, get rid of it.'
While David Lake from Wisconsin wrote: ‘It's a lame word. It's all about me, me, me. Put the smartphone away. Nobody cares about you.’
The term was made popular by celebs in 2013 who posted 'selfies' on Twitter and Instagram.
The next most annoying word 'twerk' became popular after Miley Cyrus' performance at the MTV Video Music Awards with Robin Thicke in August.
