It has become common for the doctors to perform the Caesarean section for deliveries to save the time and to earn the money. The reasons could be some other, like Muhurat baby, Carrying woman health condition.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has made it clear that this method of deliveries should be performed only when the medical need is there. The alarming number of the un-natural type of delivery procedures have led to this decision by the WHO.

One in four babies delivered in Mumbai hospitals are out through the C-section only, Dr Ameet Patki, president, Mumbai Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society (MOGS), said.

"There has been a rise in C-section cases in the last 20 years. Patients themselves insist on C-section. Muhurat baby is one reason. Doctors shouldn't entertain such requests and go for it only when medically required," Patki said.

The private hospitals would prefer the C-section than that of the civic hospitals, since the Caesarian delivery rate was at 37.81% in private hospital and in the public or government hospitals it was 19.77 %.

Following the increase in the cost of C sections in high and middle-income countries- WHO has asked the gynecologists to adopt the internationally accepted Robson classification system. According to the Robson classification, which was proposed in 2001, the system classifies women into 10 groups, based on their obstetric characteristics (parity, previous CS, gestational age, onset of labour, fetal presentation and the number of fetuses).

According to WHO, since 1985, the international healthcare community has considered the "ideal rate" for C sections to be between 10 and 15%. But most of the private hospitals are going for more than 50 percent of deliveries in this mode only without any reason.

Fear of labour pains in the natural process, higher levels of blood pressure and allied reasons, pre-fixed timing for birth (muhurat/muhurtham), impatience of doctors, and demand of money by those feel the profession is just for money grabbing are the best reasons for this menace.

The governments, medical officials and health experts should monitor all the hospitals where the unnecessary medical surgeries were taken up.
