Unless you're trying to get pregnant, having your period on time can be both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, there are cramps, bloating, and mood swings to deal with. On the other, the relief of not being pregnant (unless you want to!) Missing your period when babies aren’t on the agenda can freak you, but there are other reasons too why your flow could get delayed. Here are some of the potential reasons why you could be getting your period late.

Major Weight Loss or Excessive Exercise
If your BMI slips below 18 or 19, you may miss periods. Besides that, conditions like anorexia and bulimia can also lead to missed periods, and so can training for race or some other major sport that requires you to exercise more than normal. Nature has its way of bulwarking you from getting pregnant when body is acutely stressed out. Your body naturally staves ovulation so that you don’t have a surplus of estrogen in your body, don’t build a big uterine lining, and then don't get a period.

Stress
A shocking event in your life can trigger hypothalamic amenorrhea, wherein the hypothalamus, the region in brain where hormones for your period are regulated, is very affected by stress. So, a death in the family, huge breakup, or any other life changing event can shake you up and delay period.

A Thyroid Irregularity
Any imbalance in that little gland, located in your neck, and the one that regulates your metabolism can have implications for your period. If you notice other symptoms of a thyroid disorder, check in with your doctor for an official diagnosis.

Polycystic Ovary Symptom
PCOS is a hormone imbalance that comes down to a lack of ovulation, so you have altered levels of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. It can cause you to completely miss your period or just not menstruate regularly.Your doctor can help you come up with a treatment plan to manage the condition.
