According to reports, Swedish researchers at Karolinksa Institutet in Sweden have published their results on the relation between sleep and attractiveness in the 'Journal of Sleep'.
In the study men and women, who were part of the study, were sleep deprived for 31 hours. A group of 40 observers were asked to rate photographs of these men and women before and after they were sleep deprived. The aim of the study was to see whether sleep deprivation can be spotted merely by looking at the person's face. And also to determine if a person's face appears different because of lack of sleep.
The study revealed that lack of sleep is visible to onlookers. Signs like lower alertness, bags under the eyes, red eyes and more wrinkles/fine lines was found among the men and women after they were sleep deprivated. Besides, lack of sleep lead to the subjects having more hanging eyelids, darker circles under the eyes, more swollen eyes, paler skin, and also droopy corners of the mouth.
Lack of sleep also made the sleep-deprived individuals look sadder than those who got enough sleep at night. The study reveals that lack of sleep affects the appearance of mouth, eyes and skin, and tell other people about sleep deprivation. These facial features have an important role in communication, and cues relating to fatigue and sleep deprivation in these features may have social consiquences in day-to-day life of the person.
