Himanta Biswa Sarma former Minister in the Tarun Gogoi government in Assam, signaled that he would be joining BJP in a couple of days after he met Amit Shah, BJP president, in New Delhi.

The decision of Mr. Sarma’s move comes as a blow to congress with elections in Assam is due next year. He sent his resignation to the All India Congress Committee from the primary membership of the Congress.

Mr. Sarma said, “I met Amit Shahji to discuss certain outstanding issues with regard to Assam, and expressed my willingness to work under the strong leadership of the BJP. I shall be formally joining the party in the next few days.”

Once, Mr. Sarma was an important part of the Ministry of Gogoi. The Chief Minister’s competing ambitions and business interests made him fell out. Sarma was modes out of the Cabinet by Mr. Gogoi more than a year ago.
