A new law introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to amend maternity welfare for women in India's workforce and advance them to further their careers is probably to have the opposite consequence, a survey showed.

According to TeamLease Services Ltd., the law will likely lead to losing a job and deter smaller enterprises, start-ups from hiring women.

The job losing count among women will be nearly 1.8 million across ten sectors in the financial year to March 2019, the survey showed.

The job loss number would be approximately 10-12 million, if the aforementioned estimation is computed across all the sectors, according to the survey by the staffing and human resources company.

The survey was conducted across the sectors among 300 employers.

While big and professional managed companies will back the reform issue, which is amply funded by the employer, small and medium-sized companies would resist hiring women.

According to world bank estimate Since 2004, approximately 20 million women, vanished from India's workforce.

The law has been introduced by Modi government to empowers the women working in the organized sector to 26 weeks paid maternity leave, up from 12 weeks.

The 80 percent to 90 percent of the annual salary retention could cost for white-collar employees, and up to 135 percent of annual salary for blue-collar employees, the survey said.

"These kinds of reforms are essentially supported by proactive governments across the world with complementing tax concessions, which are missing in India," said K. Sudarshan, managing partner for India at executive search firm EMA Partners International.

"Small and medium-sized companies generally operate with less staff. If two of five women employees opt for maternity leave, that can cripple the firm itself," he added.
