Indian-origin woman convicted in counterfeit racket in UK

An Indian-origin woman, hailing from Punjab along with an Asian man were given one-year suspended prison sentences after been convicted by the Birmingham crown court for their role in the operating counterfeit clothing factory in Leicester, East Midlands.

46-year-old Tarsem Kaur and 60-year-old Altaf Sattar, pleaded guilty to a total 22 criminal offences of counterfeiting under the Trade Marks Act, officials in Leicester said.

Law enforcement officials found 6,143 counterfeit labels and swing tags for clothing and 894 completed garments. That included 14 brands such as Nike, Superdry, UGG, Henri Lloyd, Lacoste and North Face- all with an estimated street value of 150,000 pounds.

Some of the counterfeit brands were found packed into boxes, which ready to go, while a large quantity of child-size Adidas-branded clothing was found partially made with sewing machines.

Kaur was arrested in the factory, while Sattar was arrested later.

The Birmingham crown court was told that the counterfeit was being sold at street markets across the United Kingdom.
