First Asian woman, Bobbie Cheema-Grubb, who is a Punjabi-origin barrister, has become the high court judge in the UK. In 1989, she joined bar and in 2013 became counsel for the Queen of England. Next month, the 49-year-old will join the Queen's bench division. The lady is a highly regarded senior treasury counsel.
Her official page on 2 Hare Court, a website, describes her as having reputation for hard working nature with an astute tactical sense.
The biography reads, "That make her, for many, the first choice for the most serious criminal trials and quasi-criminal public law work." She is specialized in homicide, fraud, terrorism, and corruption cases.
In 2011, she was hailed as a “wonderful performer" by the Chambers UK and in 2010 as "a first-class advocate with first-class drafting skills." She was called by the Legal 500 as "excellent role model for the new breed of barristers who need to be team players".
Judge Juliet Mary May QC, who is a circuit judge at present, is the other woman to join the high court. With these two joining, the number of women judges in UK high court will raise to 23.
Bobbie admitted that law is her second choice, even though she had a flourishing career as a lawyer. "NASA didn't reply to the application sent by a little Indian girl from Yorkshire," she was quoted by daily last year.
