Towering Construction Crane Crashes Into Grand Mecca Mosque, 107 KilledHot Buzz

Due to a violent rainstorm on Friday, a towering construction crane toppled over and crashed into the Grand Mosque in the Saudi city of Mecca. Eventually, 107 people were killed prior to the annual hajj pilgrimage later this month.

Numerous bodies lying amidst bold pools are being attended by onlookers and police. The wounded are being whisked to area hospitals by ambulances. Official Twitter accounts of Saudi Arabia's civil defense authority are providing a series of increasing casualty numbers. Until Saturday early morning, the number of injured in the disaster is 238. Saudi state television aired images indicated that the mosque’s roof was smashed by the metal boom of the crane. The owner of the collapsed crane was not identified yet.

The presidency of the Mecca and Medina mosque affairs spokesman Ahmed bin Mohammed al-Mansouri said that the accident took place during the Friday afternoon when severe storms hit along with strong winds and heavy rains in a statement that was carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

Even though the nationalities of the victims were not yet provided, the tragedy had probably hit most countries.

Expressing condolences, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said the U.S. stands with Saudi Arabia and "all Muslims around the world in the aftermath of this dreadful incident at one of Islam's holiest sites."
