Indian Government on Monday said that the customers will get some relief in two to three weeks as prices of onions and, pulses are likely to come down.
 
By 10 September 2015, first tranche of onion from estimated 10,000 tonnes will probably reach India. It is expected that, around 1,000 tonnes of imported arhar dal will reach JNPT within a week.

Additionally, tenders for 5,000 tonnes of urad dal imports are to be opened on Tuesday. The tenders will be finalized so that imports can begin. Tender approvals were already given by the government for importing 5,000 tonnes of arhar dal to domestic prices.

A consumer affairs department official said, "These steps will improve the availability of key kitchen items. We expect the states to take pro-active steps so that the imported items reach the consumers at affordable prices.”

The department secretary C Viswanath who held a review meetings with government agencies and organization representatives importing both onions and pulses, said that there is even a view to evaluate if it is necessary to continue imports of onions until fresh produce arrives.

The consumer affairs department said in an official release that, "It was decided that a core team consisting of officials of consumer affairs, agriculture, MMTC, SFAC and NAFED would be video conferencing with the states, once the tenders were opened to ascertain requirements of the states and also the modalities of reaching the stocks to the states and the mechanism of retail distribution."
