Two teenage brothers of Punjabi-origin have come up with a new idea to conserve water in the US. They were worried about the prolonged drought condition in the state of California, which made them invent the method. The US lawmakers are debating on the bill in the provincial assembly to make this happen.

Rajvarun Singh Grewal, 16, and Arijeet Singh Grewal, 14, are brothers staying in Hanford in the Central Valley of California. The bill proposed by them involves the provision of subsidy to those who replace natural grass with synthetic turf. According to them this will enable to save water and benefit farmers. Farmers in the key farming state of US are struggling due to extreme drought, which is a serious threat to agriculture. According to the brothers, water will be saved and benefit farmers with this arrangement.

Introduced in February by Rudy Salas, the Bakersfield assembly member, the bill (AB 603) has crossed the first stage. According to the bill, financial assistance would be given to all those who would like replace grass lawns with artificial grass.

Rajvarun from Hanford told TOI over phone that, "Last summer we were changing the grass in our lawn and told our father to opt for synthetic grass. But he said that synthetic grass would be too expensive, unless there was state subsidy on it. That set me and my brother thinking about asking the government to give incentives to people to use synthetic grass in their lawns."
